TX6 – Medium Temperature Ceramic Epoxy Wearing Compound

Data Sheet

TX6 is a 100% solids, solvent-free, ceramic-filled epoxy coating designed to provide superior protection for metals in aggressive environments— specially where abrasion and chemical resistance are required. While it is not intended as a high-temperature specialty product, it performs reliably in service conditions up to 203°C (400°F). It can be easily applied by plastic squeegee or trowel in thicknesses up to 1000 mils without sagging.

Application Sheet

Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is essential for the long-term performance of this product. Exact surface preparation requirements vary depending on the severity of the application, the expected service life, and the initial condition of the substrate. All sharp edges and welds must be ground to a 3 mm (120 mil) radius using an abrasive disc. Optimal preparation will provide a surface that is thoroughly clean of all contaminants and rough with an angular profile between 75–125 µm (3–5 mils). This is typically achieved through initial cleaning and degreasing followed by abrasive blasting to near-white metal cleanliness, or by mechanical preparation. For application on rubber, the surface should be left clean and roughened with a rotary brush and thoroughly cleaned.

Mixing
horoughly mix the activator into the base using a mixing stick, scraping the sides and bottom of the container. Mix at a ratio of 2 parts Base to 1 part Activator by weight. Mix thoroughly to produce a uniform, streak-free material. Never add solvents.

Application
Use a heavy-duty plastic squeegee or putty knife to apply a minimum thickness of 3 mm. Work the material into the substrate profile to achieve maximum adhesion and eliminate any trapped air. Shape and contour using a putty knife or plastic applicator. If using a mold or form, be sure to coat its surface with a release agent to prevent adhesion of the material.

Application Temperature: Keep between 55 to 95ºF (17 to 35ºC). Substrate: keep between 45 to 105ºF (7 to 40ºC). the difference in temperature of the substrate and the material should never exceed 10ºF, 5ºC. Substrate shall be a minimum of 5ºF (3ºC) above dew point. Do not apply if relative humidity exceeds 90%. If necessary, heat the metal prior to surface preparation using electric heater or heat lamp. Never use gas, oil or kerosene heaters as they will leave a greasy residue on metal surface. For best results keep all material in warm area overnight (75ºF+) for ease of mixing.
